Vicks Plant, Plectranthus tomentosa Zone 9-11 or houseplant
Vicks Plant gets its name from its unusual scent. Rub it or break one of the succulent leaves and you get a strong whiff of… Vicks Vap-O-Rub!
This is not an edible plant. We use it strictly for medicinal purposes and for its fuzzy, succulent leaves that make such an interesting addition to our houseplant collection.
Vicks Plant blooms in the spring with a tiny blue flower at the ends of long stems. Really long stems, sometimes as much as two feet long! Baby plants will be scattered along the length of this stem so if you want more plants, here’s your chance to grab them.
If you have a head cold, snap a leaf in half and inhale the scent. It will help to clear up the stuffiness, along with some of the chest congestion. Need a quick vaporizer? Set a pan of water to simmer on the stove and drop in a few slightly bruised Vicks Plant leaves. You will soon smell it throughout the room as it goes to work clearing your sinuses.
Vicks Plant is a succulent with thick fleshy leaves. Do not over-water it. Let it dry out between waterings and it will thrive for you.
